TESTING OF INTERNAL

COMBUSTION ENGINES

CLASS NOTES

 The testing is to verify

the designed data. It gives the

information for the developed engine

(i) To get and know information which is not possible by calculations

(ii) To confirm the validity of the data and assumptions used in design

(iii) To satisfy the customer of the mileage per liter of fuel consumed

       Types of testing

a. Commercial testing

b. Thermodynamic testing

   Commercial Testing

(i) To determine BHP/kg of fuel

(ii) To determine the quantity of lubricating oil used per BHP

(iii) To determine the quantity of cooling water required per BHP

(iv) To determine the overload capacity of the IC Engine

(v) To determine the steadiness of the IC engine under different loads

(vi) To check the proper opening and closing timings of the inlet and exhaust valves

(vii) To check for maintenance free operation

  Thermodynamic Testing

(i) Carry out the tests to compare the actual performance. These tests prepare the heat balance sheet of the engine.

(ii) Measurement of indicated power

(iii) Measurement of the BHP

(iv) Measurement of the rate of fuel consumption

(v) Heat carried away with the exhaust gases

(vi) Measurement of the calorific value of the fuel

PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS

Only after testing of internal combustion engines, one can be sure about the degree of success. It gives information about the conversion of calorific heat (chemical energy) into mechanical energy (motion).  It evaluates the performance of the engine. The various  engine performance parameters are

(a) Power produced

(b) Mechanical Efficiency

(c) Mean Effective Pressure

(d)Torque

(e) Specific Output

(f) Volumetric Efficiency

(g) Fuel-air Ratio

(h) Specific Fuel Consumption

(i) Thermal Efficiency

(j)  Heat Balance

(k) Exhaust Smoke and Other Emissions

(l) Specific Weight
